South Dakota Man in Jail for Vehicle Theft
On December 20, 2016 at 9:49 a.m. a resident on North U.S. Highway 83 reported their vehicle had just been stolen. The resident advised their van was warming up in the front of the home when a male subject ran into the yard. They watched in disbelief as the subject got into the van, backed it up striking another vehicle, then drove through a barbed wire fence and on to the highway. The vehicle traveled north on U.S. Highway 83.
Multiple Deputies responded to the area and surrounding law enforcement was contacted. Logan County Sheriff Sean Carson observed the vehicle crossing the Lincoln / Logan county line and stopped it. Sheriff Carson detained the lone male driver and a short time later Lincoln County Deputies arrived to assist.
The suspect was identified as thirty year old Alec Burnette of Mission, South Dakota. Mr. Burnette was taken to the Lincoln County Detention Center and incarcerated. Mr. Burnette was charged with Felony Theft and Criminal Mischief. The 1999 GMC Van was returned to the resident, it had minimal damage.
