Death ruled a Homicide

On June 8, 2020, at 11:07 a.m., the 911 Center received a call of a body floating in the Nebraska Public Power District Canal between Hershey and North Platte, NE. Sheriff’s Deputies, North Platte Fire and Rescue and the Lincoln County Dive Team were sent to .7 miles west of Wagon Trail Road along the canal system.

Rescue worker did recover the body of an older male subject from the canal. A vehicle belonging to the subject was located near Hershey/Dickens Road along the canal, several miles upstream. This is an ongoing death investigation. The name of the subject is being withheld at this time.

Update June 9, 2020:
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office has identified the body of the deceased as; sixty-eight year old Nicholas Legas of rural North Platte, NE. An autopsy will be performed on June 11, 2020. This is an ongoing death investigation.

UPDATE:
The cause of death of sixty-eight year old Nicholas Legas of rural North Platte, NE. has been ruled Homicide by forensic pathologist in Gibbon, NE. The manner of death is blunt force trauma and strangulation. The investigation in this matter has been ongoing since June 8, 2020.
